Duplex stainless steels are extremely corrosion resistant, work hardenable alloys. Their microstructures consist of a mixture of austenite and ferrite phases. As a result, duplex stainless steels display properties characteristic of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels. This combination of properties can mean some compromise when compared with pure austenitic and pure ferritic grades.
Applications which can benefit from the use of these high alloy super duplex steels involve piping systems, pumps (where the good erosion and abrasion resistance is employed), valves, heat exchangers and diverse other equipment. Recently, the excellent corrosion resistance of the new super duplex Ferralium alloy SD40 has been exploited for subsea electrical connectors on the Saga Snorre and Total South Ellon developments. In one case the super duplex material was chosen to replace standard austenitic stainless steel which had suffered from corrosion attack.

Grade 254 SMO is a very high end austenitic stainless steel. It is designed with a combination of impact toughness resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking, and pitting and crevice corrosion with strength that is twice that of the stainless steel 300 series. For certain applications, grade 254 SMO has been reported to be a cost-effective substitute for high nickel and titanium alloys. It is known to possess excellent workability as well.
SMO 254 Buttweld Pipe Fittings (UNS S31254) suited for high chloride environments such as brackish water seawater pulp mill bleach plants and other high chloride process streams. Inconel alloys are oxidation and corrosion resistant materials well suited for service in extreme environments subjected to pressure and heat. When heated, Inconel forms a thick, stable, passivating oxide layer protecting the surface from further attack. Inconel retains strength over a wide temperature range, attractive for high temperature applications where aluminum and steel would succumb to creep as a result of thermally induced crystal vacancies. Inconel’s high temperature strength is developed by solid solution strengthening or precipitation strengthening, depending on the alloy. In age hardening or precipitation strengthening varieties, alloying additions of aluminum and titanium combine with Inconel to form the intermetallic compound Ni3(Ti,Al) or gamma prime (?’). Gamma prime forms small cubic crystals that inhibit slip and creep effectively at elevated temperatures.
Inconel alloys are typically used in high temperature applications. It is sometimes referred to in English as “Inco” (or occasionally “Iconel”). Common trade names for Inconel Alloy 625 include: Inconel 625, Chronin 625, Altemp 625, Haynes 625, Inconelvac 625 and Nicrofer 6020.

Monel Alloy is stronger than steel, resistant to corrosion and acids, and highly resistant to alkalis which makes it ideal for marine applications and applications with highly corrosive conditions. ASME B 16.9 Monel Buttweld Fittings is a nickel- copper alloy with great strength and exceptional resistance to corrosion in a range of media especially sea water, hydrofluoric acid, sulphuric acid and alkalis. ASTM B366 Monel UNS N04400 Reducer is the component in the pipeline that reduces the pipe size from a larger to a smaller bore. ANSI B16.28 Monel UNS N05500 Pipe Elbow works in a wide range of temperatures and has exceptionally good dimensional stability.
